Condition
Headaches & Migraines
Recurring headaches and migraines are often caused by tension and misalignment in the upper cervical spine, which interferes with blood flow and nerve function. Chiropractic care addresses the structural root cause rather than masking the pain with medication.
Common Symptoms
- Tension headaches at the base of the skull
- Migraines with sensitivity to light and sound
- Headaches that start in the neck and radiate upward
- Frequent need for over-the-counter or prescription pain medication
- Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
- Nausea or visual disturbances with headaches
- Headaches triggered by stress, poor sleep, or screen time
- Pain behind one or both eyes
- Scalp tenderness or jaw clenching
- Headaches that worsen throughout the day
How We Help
If you're dealing with headaches or migraines on a regular basis, you already know how much they take from you — lost work days, missed family time, and the constant background worry about when the next one will hit. Most people manage headaches with medication, which can be effective for the immediate pain but does nothing to address why the headaches keep happening. At Trinity Life Chiropractic, we take a different approach. We look for the structural and neurological source of your headaches and work to correct it so they occur less frequently — and often stop altogether.
The majority of recurring headaches originate from the upper cervical spine — specifically the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae at the very top of your neck. These two vertebrae are unique in the spine: they're the most mobile, they house the brainstem, and they're surrounded by a dense network of nerves and blood vessels that supply the head and brain. When either of these vertebrae is misaligned — even slightly — it can restrict blood flow to the brain, irritate the nerves in the surrounding area, and create chronic tension in the suboccipital muscles at the base of your skull. This is the mechanism behind cervicogenic headaches, which are headaches that originate from the neck but are felt in the head, behind the eyes, or across the forehead.
Migraines involve additional neurological complexity, but the cervical spine connection is equally relevant. Research published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics has found that chiropractic adjustments significantly reduced migraine frequency, duration, and intensity in study participants. The upper cervical spine influences the trigeminocervical nucleus — a region of the brainstem involved in migraine pathways. When misalignment creates interference in this area, it may lower the threshold for migraine triggers, meaning stimuli that wouldn't normally cause a migraine (stress, certain foods, hormonal changes) become enough to set one off.
Our evaluation process begins with a detailed history of your headache patterns — frequency, location, triggers, duration, and what you've already tried. We then perform our INSiGHT neurological scans, which measure how your nervous system is functioning from the top of the spine to the bottom. These scans show us patterns of stress, asymmetry, and interference that correlate with headache-producing misalignments. Combined with a physical examination of your cervical spine, posture, and range of motion, we build a clear picture of what's driving your headaches and create a targeted care plan.
The adjustments themselves are precise and gentle. We're not applying general force to the neck — we're making specific corrections to the vertebrae that are out of position. Many patients feel an immediate sense of relief or lightness in the head and neck area after their first adjustment. For chronic headache sufferers, the typical pattern we see is a reduction in headache frequency and intensity over the first few weeks of care, with many patients eventually going weeks or months without a headache after completing their corrective care plan. We also address contributing factors like forward head posture, jaw tension, and workplace ergonomics.
What frustrates many headache and migraine sufferers is being told they simply need to manage their triggers better or take more medication. While trigger management is important, it doesn't explain why one person gets a migraine from a glass of wine and another doesn't. The structural health of your cervical spine is often the missing piece. When the nervous system is functioning without interference, the body's threshold for handling stress, dietary triggers, and hormonal fluctuations increases. That's why many of our patients tell us their known triggers no longer produce the same response after care. We're not treating headaches — we're restoring the nervous system function that helps your body handle life without producing them.
Common Questions
Can a chiropractor really help with migraines?
Yes. Multiple studies, including research published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, have found that chiropractic adjustments significantly reduced migraine frequency, duration, and intensity. Many of our patients who suffered from weekly or biweekly migraines experience dramatic improvement once the upper cervical misalignment is corrected.
How is chiropractic different from taking headache medication?
Medication manages the symptom — it blocks the pain signal. Chiropractic care addresses the structural and neurological cause of why the headache is occurring in the first place. Both have their place, but correcting the root issue often provides longer-lasting relief and reduces the need for ongoing medication.
How many visits before my headaches improve?
Many headache patients notice improvement within 2-4 visits. Some experience relief after their very first adjustment. Chronic, long-standing headache patterns may take longer to fully resolve, but the trajectory is usually clear within the first few weeks — you'll know it's working.
What types of headaches does chiropractic help with?
Chiropractic care is most effective for tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches (originating from the neck), and migraines. These represent the vast majority of recurring headaches. We evaluate each patient individually and will refer you for further evaluation if we identify signs of a headache type that requires different care.
Can children get chiropractic care for headaches?
Absolutely. Children and teens increasingly suffer from headaches, often related to heavy backpacks, screen time, and poor posture. Pediatric adjustments are very gentle and can be highly effective for reducing headache frequency in young patients. We see children of all ages in our office.
Why do my headaches always start in my neck?
This is actually one of the clearest indicators that your headaches have a cervical spine origin. When upper cervical vertebrae are misaligned, they irritate the nerves and muscles at the base of the skull. The pain starts there and radiates upward and forward — often settling behind the eyes or across the forehead. This pattern responds very well to specific cervical adjustments.

Other concerns we help with.
Chronic Neck Pain
Neck pain that lingers for weeks or months is rarely just muscle tightness. It's usually a sign of spinal misalignment creating nerve interference, chronic muscle tension, and progressive degeneration that won't resolve on its own.
Constipation (Infant & Child)
Constipation in babies and children is often linked to nervous system interference affecting gut motility and digestive function. Gentle chiropractic adjustments help restore proper nerve communication to the digestive system, offering relief without medication.
Growing Pains
Growing pains are common in children, but they're often dismissed as normal when they may indicate spinal tension, muscular imbalance, or nervous system stress that responds well to gentle chiropractic care.
Poor Sleep & Insomnia
Poor sleep affects everything — mood, focus, immune function, and healing. When the nervous system is stuck in a stressed state, the body physically cannot wind down for restful sleep, no matter how many supplements or sleep hygiene tips you try.
Postpartum Back Pain
Postpartum back pain affects the majority of new mothers as the body recovers from pregnancy, labor, and the physical demands of caring for a newborn. The structural shifts from pregnancy don't always self-correct — chiropractic care speeds recovery and restores pelvic balance.
Sciatica
Sciatica is the shooting pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg. It occurs when the sciatic nerve — the longest nerve in the body — is compressed or irritated, most often due to spinal misalignment or disc issues.
