Condition
Torticollis (Infant)
Torticollis is a condition where a baby's neck muscles are tight on one side, causing the head to tilt or rotate in one direction. It's one of the most common musculoskeletal issues in newborns and can lead to flat head syndrome, developmental delays, and nursing difficulties if not addressed early.
Common Symptoms
- Head consistently tilted to one side
- Difficulty turning head in one direction
- Preferring to nurse on one side
- Developing a flat spot on the skull (plagiocephaly)
- Fussiness when trying to turn the head
- Limited range of motion in the neck
- Asymmetrical crawling or movement patterns
- One eye appearing smaller than the other due to head positioning
- Preferring to look in only one direction when lying down
- Neck muscle tightness or a small lump on one side of the neck
How We Help
Infant torticollis develops when one of the neck muscles — specifically the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) — becomes shortened or tightened on one side. This commonly happens from positioning in the womb, especially in breech presentations, multiple pregnancies, or when the baby is crowded in utero. It can also result from physical stress during the birth process itself, including prolonged labor, vacuum or forceps-assisted delivery, or C-section births where the baby is pulled from an unusual angle. Understanding the cause helps us target our care more precisely.
From a neurological perspective, the upper cervical spine — the top two vertebrae in your baby's neck — plays a critical role in head and neck movement. When these vertebrae are misaligned from birth trauma, the surrounding muscles tighten in response to protect the area. This creates a cycle: the misalignment causes muscle guarding, and the muscle guarding reinforces the head tilt. Simply stretching the muscle without addressing the underlying spinal alignment often leads to incomplete or temporary improvement. That's why many families find their way to our office after weeks of stretching exercises alone haven't fully resolved the issue.
At Trinity Life Chiropractic, we use incredibly gentle fingertip adjustments — no more pressure than you'd use to test a ripe tomato — to restore proper alignment in the upper cervical spine. These are not the adjustments you might picture for adults. There is no twisting, cracking, or sudden movement. We use sustained, light pressure applied to very specific contact points. Most babies relax during the adjustment, and many actually fall asleep. Parents are often surprised by how gentle and quick the process is.
Before any adjustment, we perform a thorough evaluation that includes observing your baby's head position, range of motion, and movement patterns. We use our INSiGHT scanning technology to measure nervous system function and identify exactly where interference is occurring. These scans are completely non-invasive — they simply read the electrical activity along the spine — and they give us an objective baseline so we can track your baby's progress over time. This technology helps us be precise rather than guessing where to focus our care.
In addition to in-office adjustments, we teach parents specific at-home stretches, positioning techniques, and tummy-time strategies that support the correction between visits. We also work closely with pediatric physical therapists and occupational therapists in the Allen and DFW area when a collaborative approach is needed. When torticollis is caught early and addressed from both the muscular and spinal alignment perspective, most cases resolve within a matter of weeks — not months.
Early intervention is key with infant torticollis. The longer the head remains tilted, the greater the risk of developing plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome), which may eventually require a cranial helmet. Beyond the cosmetic concerns, untreated torticollis can affect developmental milestones like rolling, crawling symmetrically, and visual tracking. We encourage parents to have their baby evaluated as soon as they notice a persistent head tilt — even if their pediatrician says to wait and see. Waiting rarely makes torticollis easier to correct, but early care almost always does.
Common Questions
At what age can a baby be adjusted for torticollis?
We see babies as young as a few days old. In fact, the earlier torticollis is addressed, the faster it typically resolves and the lower the risk of complications like flat head development. Newborn adjustments are extraordinarily gentle — parents often describe them as softer than a massage.
Is the chiropractic adjustment safe for my newborn?
Absolutely. Pediatric adjustments for infants use sustained fingertip pressure — about the same force you'd comfortably apply to your own eyelid. There is no twisting or cracking involved. Most babies relax or sleep right through the adjustment, and many parents tell us their baby seems more comfortable immediately afterward.
Will my baby need a cranial helmet if they have torticollis?
Not necessarily. Early intervention with chiropractic care and targeted stretching often prevents the need for a cranial helmet by correcting the head tilt before significant skull flattening occurs. The sooner treatment begins after you notice the tilt, the better the outcomes tend to be.
How many visits does it take to correct infant torticollis?
Every baby is different, but many families see significant improvement within 4-8 visits over the course of a few weeks. Mild cases caught early may resolve even faster. We track progress with objective measurements at each visit so you can see the improvement clearly.
What causes torticollis in babies?
The most common causes are positioning in the womb — especially in breech or cramped positions — and physical stress during delivery. Vacuum-assisted births, forceps deliveries, prolonged labor, and C-sections can all contribute to upper cervical misalignment that leads to the characteristic head tilt.
Can torticollis come back after it's been corrected?
Once the underlying spinal alignment is corrected and the muscles have regained their full flexibility, recurrence is uncommon. We teach parents positioning and stretching techniques to maintain the correction, and we recommend periodic check-ups during the first year to make sure everything stays on track.

Other concerns we help with.
Chronic Neck Pain
Neck pain that lingers for weeks or months is rarely just muscle tightness. It's usually a sign of spinal misalignment creating nerve interference, chronic muscle tension, and progressive degeneration that won't resolve on its own.
Constipation (Infant & Child)
Constipation in babies and children is often linked to nervous system interference affecting gut motility and digestive function. Gentle chiropractic adjustments help restore proper nerve communication to the digestive system, offering relief without medication.
Growing Pains
Growing pains are common in children, but they're often dismissed as normal when they may indicate spinal tension, muscular imbalance, or nervous system stress that responds well to gentle chiropractic care.
Headaches & Migraines
Recurring headaches and migraines are often caused by tension and misalignment in the upper cervical spine, which interferes with blood flow and nerve function. Chiropractic care addresses the structural root cause rather than masking the pain with medication.
Poor Sleep & Insomnia
Poor sleep affects everything — mood, focus, immune function, and healing. When the nervous system is stuck in a stressed state, the body physically cannot wind down for restful sleep, no matter how many supplements or sleep hygiene tips you try.
Postpartum Back Pain
Postpartum back pain affects the majority of new mothers as the body recovers from pregnancy, labor, and the physical demands of caring for a newborn. The structural shifts from pregnancy don't always self-correct — chiropractic care speeds recovery and restores pelvic balance.
