Breaking the Antibiotic Cycle

What this is
Sick of Being Sick?
Chronic ear infections and constant colds are a sign that your child's body isn't draining or defending itself properly. Before opting for tubes or another round of antibiotics, it's worth understanding the mechanical and neurological cause behind the cycle. When the upper cervical spine is misaligned — often from birth trauma — it can block the Eustachian tubes from draining and suppress the immune system's ability to fight infection effectively. Addressing this root cause can break the cycle for good.
What we help with
The signals we hear most often.
These are the things that bring families to Ear Infections & Immunity. None of them are the actual problem — they're just the most visible symptoms of an underlying nervous-system pattern.
Fluid Buildup
Tight muscles and misaligned vertebrae in the upper neck can physically block the Eustachian tubes from draining fluid out of the middle ear. In young children, these tubes are already nearly horizontal, making them especially vulnerable to obstruction when cervical tension is present.
Recurring Infections
Stagnant fluid trapped in the middle ear becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses, leading to infections that come back every few weeks. Each round of antibiotics kills the bacteria temporarily, but the mechanical blockage remains, virtually guaranteeing the infection will return.
Antibiotic Side Effects
Repeated rounds of antibiotics damage gut flora, which is directly linked to immune function and overall health. Children who take frequent antibiotics often develop digestive issues, food sensitivities, and paradoxically become more susceptible to future infections as their gut health deteriorates.
Hearing Concerns
Chronic fluid buildup in the middle ear muffles sound transmission, which can affect speech development, language acquisition, and hearing at a critical stage of your child's growth. Left unaddressed, this can lead to speech delays and learning difficulties.
By the numbers
94%
of patients in our ear infections & immunity program complete the corrective phase of their care plan — meaning the change shows up in the data, not just on the table.
How we approach it
Plumbing & Wiring
We address the 'plumbing' problem by gently adjusting the upper cervical spine, releasing the muscular tension that locks the Eustachian tubes shut and allowing them to open and drain naturally. Simultaneously, we boost the 'wiring' by removing nervous system interference so the immune system can fire on all cylinders and fight off infections the way it was designed to. Dr. Colton O'Brien uses INSiGHT scanning to assess your child's nervous system function and track improvement as the body heals.

What changes
The benefits people notice first.
Natural Drainage
When the upper cervical spine is properly aligned, the muscles controlling the Eustachian tubes can relax and allow fluid to drain without the need for surgical tubes. Many children in our office have avoided tube surgery entirely after starting care.
Stronger Immunity
A clear nervous system coordinates a faster, more effective immune response to pathogens. Research shows that chiropractic adjustments can boost white blood cell production, helping your child's body fight off illness more efficiently and recover faster when they do get sick.
Fewer Sick Days
Kids stay in school and parents stay at work. Families in our office consistently report that their children get sick far less frequently and recover faster than before starting care, which means less disruption to everyone's lives.
Drug-Free Approach
Support your child's natural defenses rather than relying on medications that only address symptoms. By building a stronger immune foundation through nervous system care, your child's body becomes better equipped to handle whatever it encounters.
“We were scheduled for tubes next month. After starting care, the fluid cleared completely. The ENT cancelled the surgery! We are so grateful.”

Your path
Three steps to lasting wellness.
Every ear infections & immunity care plan walks the same arc. The visit length, frequency, and specific protocols vary — the spine of the plan does not.
- 1
Consult & scan
We start with a conversation and three INSiGHT scans to see exactly what's going on in your nervous system. No guessing, no gut-check — just data.
- 2
Custom care plan
We build a plan tailored to your nervous system's specific needs, your goals, and your stage of life. You see the recommendation before you commit to anything.
- 3
Gentle adjustments
Specific, gentle corrections to clear the interference and let your body do what it was designed to do — heal. Re-scanned at the end of each phase so you can see the change.
Before you book
Common questions about Ear Infections & Immunity.
Can adjustments help while they are sick?
Yes! Adjustments boost immune function and help the body fight off active illness faster. Many parents bring their kids in at the first sign of a cold or ear infection and find that the illness resolves more quickly and with less severity.
How does the neck affect the ears?
A small muscle called the Tensor Veli Palatini controls the opening of the Eustachian tubes. It is innervated by nerves in the upper cervical spine. When there is tension or misalignment in this area, it can lock the tubes shut, trapping fluid and creating a perfect environment for infection.
How many ear infections should a child have before we consider chiropractic?
Even one ear infection is worth investigating the underlying cause. Most pediatricians consider 3 or more infections in 6 months as 'chronic,' but there is no reason to wait until that point. The sooner we address the cervical tension, the sooner we can break the cycle.
Will my child still need antibiotics?
We work alongside your pediatrician, not against them. If an active infection requires antibiotics, that is a medical decision between you and your doctor. Our goal is to correct the underlying mechanical and neurological cause so future infections become far less likely or stop altogether.
Can this help with recurring strep throat or sinus infections too?
Yes. The same principles apply — upper cervical misalignment can compromise lymphatic drainage and immune function in the head and neck region. Many children who suffer from chronic strep, sinus infections, or tonsillitis see significant improvement when the nervous system interference is corrected.
My child already has ear tubes. Can chiropractic still help?
Absolutely. Tubes address the drainage problem temporarily, but they don't correct the underlying cervical tension or nervous system interference that caused the fluid buildup in the first place. Chiropractic care helps ensure that when the tubes eventually fall out, the problem doesn't return.
Conditions we help with
Common conditions treated with ear infections & immunity.
Chronic Neck Pain
Neck pain that lingers for weeks or months is rarely just muscle tightness. It's usually a sign of spinal misalignment creating nerve interference, chronic muscle tension, and progressive degeneration that won't resolve on its own.
Constipation (Infant & Child)
Constipation in babies and children is often linked to nervous system interference affecting gut motility and digestive function. Gentle chiropractic adjustments help restore proper nerve communication to the digestive system, offering relief without medication.
Growing Pains
Growing pains are common in children, but they're often dismissed as normal when they may indicate spinal tension, muscular imbalance, or nervous system stress that responds well to gentle chiropractic care.
Headaches & Migraines
Recurring headaches and migraines are often caused by tension and misalignment in the upper cervical spine, which interferes with blood flow and nerve function. Chiropractic care addresses the structural root cause rather than masking the pain with medication.
Poor Sleep & Insomnia
Poor sleep affects everything — mood, focus, immune function, and healing. When the nervous system is stuck in a stressed state, the body physically cannot wind down for restful sleep, no matter how many supplements or sleep hygiene tips you try.
Postpartum Back Pain
Postpartum back pain affects the majority of new mothers as the body recovers from pregnancy, labor, and the physical demands of caring for a newborn. The structural shifts from pregnancy don't always self-correct — chiropractic care speeds recovery and restores pelvic balance.
